The Big Idea

Martin Luther’s theology is summarized by four maxims, known as the “solas” of the Reformation:

  • Sola fide: Faith alone
Relying on faith alone frees people from the fear of earning God’s grace
  • Sola scriptura: Scripture alone
Scripture is the only authority in matters of faith and doctrine
  • Solus Christus: Christ alone
The crucified Christ sacrificed himself for all of humanity. It is only to Him we look for salvation and forgiveness.
  • Sola gratia: Grace alone
God’s grace and mercy, are God’s primary way of bringing justice and the restoration of the world not only punishment.
