The Big Idea
The Idea that Technology often functions as a way to filter all of the vast date and information around us. In this way it serves and important function we can’t take in all of the information on the internet at once but we can search for something and see part of it. Or we don’t usually keep all of the phone numbers we need in our minds but we can look them up. Social media and traditional media functioned this same way. It filtered the most important stories of things it thinks will interest you so that you see that rather than all the millions of other options there are to see or interact with. This is then a two edged sword we need filters so that the sheer volume of information and things happening in the world around us don’t overwhelm and crush us but also how do we know that the filters we are living with are actually letting the right or good stuff through?
This is the start of what I think will be a much bigger idea in getting my head around how to describe and use technology today.
