The Big Idea

A Poem for Katie

We sat on a bench in the middle of the rain. It was cold but we didn’t care. New York lights danced in the distance but the dance of your laugh was all that sticks with me. No matter the cold or the wind all I wanted was to sit next to you.

We have sat on many more benches, beaches, and mountains. We have also sat in empty houses and ER rooms.

Twice we have taken the trip to the hospital to leave with one more to sit on our bench.

And as we sat on a bench looking out at the sea it wasn’t quite as quiet or cold. Yet sitting with you after all the things we’ve been through. Watching you hug our two little girls tight. No matter the time or the place or the season you make any bench feel like home.
